Create a driveway that suits your property with a choice of block paving patterns, colours and edging. County Surfacing Contractors Ltd serves homeowners across Leeds, Wakefield and Yorkshire. We can discuss ground preparation, intended use and suitable drainage for your site.

Patterns, Colours & Borders

Block paving can define a driveway with a layout and finish chosen for your home. Tell us the style you prefer, the available space and any paths or adjoining areas that need to be included.

Preparation & Drainage

A suitable base, levels and drainage need to be considered as part of the work. Conventional block paving should not automatically be described as permeable: that depends on the specified paving system and the complete construction.

Choosing Your Block Paving

  • Patterns and colours — Choose a layout and finish suited to your home.
  • Intended use — Include parking, vehicle sizes and pedestrian routes in your brief.
  • Drainage — Agree the paving system, base and drainage details for your site.
  • Edging and adjoining areas — Consider borders, paths and transitions to existing surfaces.

Preparation and drainage come first

A block paved driveway is only as strong as the layers beneath it. It needs a properly compacted sub-base, a level laying course, firm edge restraints to stop the blocks spreading, and falls that carry rainwater away from the house. Poor preparation is the usual reason block paving sinks or moves, so we look at ground conditions, levels and drainage at the free survey.

In England, paving a front garden with a hard surface over 5 square metres normally needs planning permission unless rainwater can drain naturally, for example through permeable block paving or to a planted area. If your drive crosses the pavement you may also need your council’s permission for a dropped kerb. We can talk you through both.

Repair, re-lay or replace?

Block paving is easy to repair. Sunken or stained blocks can often be lifted and re-laid, and joints can be re-filled. If large areas have sunk or the edges have moved, the base underneath needs attention, and re-laying the area on a new base gives a longer-lasting result. We will tell you honestly which suits your driveway once we have seen it.

Timescales

How long the work takes depends on the size of the area, the pattern and edging you choose, the amount of digging and base work, access and the weather, so we agree a realistic timescale with you when we book the work.

Looking after block paving

Sweep regularly, deal with weeds and moss in the joints, and wash the surface gently when needed. Over time the jointing sand may need topping up. Some people choose to seal the surface to help it resist stains and weeds, and we can talk through whether that suits your blocks.

What affects the cost

The price depends on the area, the type and colour of block, the pattern, edging, how much old surface has to be removed, drainage, access and any changes in level. That is why we survey first and give you a fixed written quote. Try our driveway cost calculator for a guide before you book, or take the driveway surface quiz to compare block paving with tarmac and resin-bound. You can also see recent driveway and patio projects, or look at paths and patios.
