New Tarmac Driveways, Resurfacing & Repairs

A driveway needs to suit both your property and the way you use it. Tell us about the space, the vehicles using it and the finish you have in mind.

The visible finish is only part of the project. Existing ground conditions, levels, preparation and drainage need consideration before work is agreed. Decorative edging can help define the space and complement the property.

Planning Your Tarmac Driveway

  • Driveway use — Tell us about vehicle sizes, parking and everyday access.
  • Appearance — Discuss the finish, shape and edging you want.
  • Preparation — Existing ground conditions and the base affect the work required.
  • Drainage — Include any standing water, drainage routes and changes in level.
  • Timing — Tell us your preferred timescale and any access restrictions.

Preparation and drainage come first

The surface is only as good as what sits under it. A tarmac driveway needs a firm, compacted sub-base, soft or unstable ground dug out, and gentle falls so rainwater runs away from the house to a drain, soakaway or planted area rather than pooling on the surface. Tell us about any standing water, and we will look at levels and drainage at the free survey.

Two rules are worth knowing before you start. In England, paving a front garden with a hard surface over 5 square metres normally needs either planning permission or a surface that lets water drain naturally. If your drive crosses the pavement, you may also need your council’s permission for a dropped kerb. We can talk you through both at the survey.

Resurface or replace?

If your existing tarmac has a sound base and the problem is mainly a worn or faded surface, resurfacing can be a sensible option. If the drive is sinking, has deep or spreading cracks, holds water, or has roots lifting it, the base has usually failed and replacing it gives a longer-lasting result. We will tell you honestly which one suits your driveway once we have seen it.

Timescales and the first few days

How long the work takes depends on the size of the drive, access, how much has to be dug out and the weather, so we agree a realistic timescale with you when we book the work. Newly laid tarmac needs time to settle, so we will tell you when you can walk, drive and park on it, and what to avoid in the first weeks, such as heavy loads and turning the wheel while stationary.

Looking after your tarmac driveway

Keep the edges clear of weeds and moss, sweep away leaves and debris, and wipe up oil, petrol and diesel quickly because they can soften tarmac. Tarmac is hard-wearing and straightforward to look after, and small repairs are usually simple to carry out later.

What affects the cost

The price depends on the area, how much old surface and soil has to be removed and taken away, access for machinery, edging, drainage needs, changes in level and how the drive will be used. That is why we survey first and give you a fixed written quote. For a guide before you book, try our driveway cost calculator, or take the driveway surface quiz if you are still choosing between tarmac, resin-bound and block paving.
